For unemployed youth who are not students - Job Connect
This is a year-round program for unemployed youth that are not attending school. Youth must be 16 - 24 years of age, or up to 29 years of age with a disability. Occasional exceptions are made to the eligibility criteria. Program participants receive access to the agency resource centre services including training workshops (see calendar) and/or one-on-one pre-employment counselling, and/or job placements. We also provide youth with support to keep their jobs.
The program offers training support in the form of bus tokens, interview clothing, tools for jobs and other necessities to find and sustain employment.
Other benefits include Job Trials that allow youth to work in a job for a few days. This allows the young person to decide if she or he likes the job, and allows the employer to see if he or she wants to hire the young person full time. While on a Job Trial, clients are usually paid by directly AYCE, not by the employer.
AYCE provides other support for youth. This support may include, but is not limited to, assistance in accessing social assistance, housing, disability supports, educational programs, literacy program, and other training programs.
To register with Job Connect youth must call and make an appointment to see an employment counsellor at AYCE, or just walk in and ask to see an employment counsellor. There might be a longer wait if you do not have an appointment, but someone will see you. Youth can also print the Participant Information Form from this web site, complete the form, and bring it with them to the appointment.
Through the Job Connect program, AYCE also works with schools to support youth that make the decision to go to work full time. If you are a young person who will no longer be attending school, or if you wish to refer a young person who will be leaving school, please call us.
Through Job Connect, AYCE also provides employment and career-related workshops in schools to students year round. All of the workshops that we offer can be provided in schools. Please call us to make arrangements for us to come in to facilitate a workshop in a school.
Also through Job Connect, AYCE provides workshops for youth at other community organizations. All of the workshops that we offer can be provided at other locations in the community.
For youth who are students returning to school in the fall - Summer Jobs Service (SJS)
This summer program runs from April to the end of summer each year. It is for 15 - 24-year-old students up to 29 with a disability who are planning to return to school in the fall. Students must first register in the Summer Jobs Service at AYCE. Then, we provide a $2 per hour wage subsidy to employers who hire registered students. Students are encouraged to look early in the year for suitable employers that want to hire them. Students can also participate in all training workshops offered in our resource centre (see news and events). AYCE can also assist cooperative education employers to hire current co-op students during the summer.
To register for Summer Jobs Service, call to check on the program availability as availability changes throughout the year. If the program is currently available, youth may print the Participant Information Form, complete it, and bring it in to AYCE. Or, walk into AYCE and complete a registration form while you are here.
